24. Seize the film: 26 Selected Films – A Reflection of the World as It Is, and a Signpost Toward the Society We Want to Build

Guided by the belief that film must both expose reality and offer a glimmer of light, this year once again I selected  stories no one can remain indifferent to.

That is why the key pillars of this year’s selection are:

• Pride, possibilities, and achievements: These films were not selected to feed the narrative of inspiration. On the contrary, I firmly believe that persons with disabilities are not here to inspire anyone, and through the program we actively challenge so-called “inspirational porn.” Instead, we bring authentic stories of success and achievement made possible through (family / community) support and systems that truly function.
• Art and independence: Through film, we show how persons with disabilities redefine everything we think the creative process and the final result should look like, while affirming that the right to independent living and freedom of choice is non-negotiable.
• Invisible disabilities and lived experiences: We open space for themes and lives that are less often spoken about, making visible what society too often overlooks or silences.
• Friendship, community, and love (including love just beginning): We remind audiences of the beauty of human connection, the warmth of community, and those first shy sparks of love that are only beginning to ignite.
